چکیده

0272-1732/00/$10.00  2000 IEEE The press and the technical community have generated much excitement and speculation about the IA-64 instruction set and the Itanium processor. Intel and HewlettPackard have rolled out (one instruction at a time) the instruction set. Intel is rolling out (one transistor at a time) the Itanium processor and other platform components. This special issue provides the broad technical community with a comprehensive introduction to the concepts and mechanisms that form the basis of the IA-64 instruction set and the related Itanium processor products. These articles were written well in advance of the product introduction for the Itanium processor. Consequently, the articles focus on describing what will be provided as these concepts and products come to market rather than how well the products and concepts work. Our intention is to provide grounding in the products and concepts to IEEE Micro readers. John Crawford

Intel Virtualization Technology: Hardware Support for Efficient Processor Virtualization

Virtualizing the physical resources of a computing system to improve sharing and utilization has been done for decades. Virtualization had once been confined to specialized server and mainframe systems, but improvements in the performance of platforms based on Intel technology now allow those platforms to efficiently support virtualization. However, the IA-32 and Itanium processor architectures...

Extending Xen* with Intel Virtualization Technology

Xen* is an open source virtual machine monitor (VMM) developed at the University of Cambridge to support operating systems (OSs) that have been modified to run on top of the monitor. Intel has extended the Xen VMM to use Intel ® Virtualization Technology ∆ (VT) to support unmodified guest OSs also. This was done for IA-32 Intel ® Architecture processors as well as Itanium ® architecture process...

The Itanium 2 Processor Extends the Processing Power of the Itanium Processor Family with a Capable and Balanced Microarchitecture. Executing up to Six Instructions at a Time, It Provides Both Performance and Binary Compatibility

On 8 July 2002, Intel introduced the Itanium 2 processor—the Itanium architecture’s second implementation. This event was a milestone in the cooperation between Intel and Hewlett-Packard to establish the Itanium architecture as a key workstation, server, and supercomputer building block. The Itanium 2 processor may appear similar to the Itanium processor, yet it represents significant advances ...
